Spotlight on Betty
Betty is the cook at Crossroads School and she makes sure the children have porridge for breakfast and a delicious hot meal, which is usually rice and beans, for lunch.
In general, the children have to walk quite a distance to get to school. Consequently, they are too far away to nip home for lunch and do not carry packed lunches. Also, the children do not have any money to be able to go out and purchase lunch from the local shop.
Betty’s role is vital. By enabling the children to eat well, they can learn well! Meal times together are an opportunity for the children to relax and develop their social skills. Global Challenge fund the school lunches for all the pupils at Crossroads School. From April 2021 to July 2021, Global Challenge will also be funding the salaries of two cooks at Crossroads to help out during the Covid-19 pandemic, as the majority of students have not been able to pay even part of their school fees.
