Redressing the Balance

A Vision for Crossroads

Over the past few years we have been developing a vision for a new school, which would enable us to continue to fulfil our objective to provide an education for the poorest pupils in the Soroti area.

Our initial plans were to develop the existing Crossroads school, which is in urgent need of hostel accomodation and more space. As it is located in a residential area it became clear that developing the existing site is not feasible. Therefore, with the support of our co-ordinator Pastor Abraham, we identified a plot of land 7km outside of Soroti. This area has no secondary school provision and many young people are missing out on the chance for an education.

The proposed site would be large enough to cater for many hundreds of young people and our vision is to make the school an example of inclusivity. We have a vision for young people supported by our special needs project benefitting from the school, whether in full time education or whilst in rehabilitation or respite.

Progress has been slow, as we first had to register as a non-governmental organisation (NGO), which we then waited to renew so that we had a five-year licence as of 2019. In March 2020, we gave the go-ahead to purchase the land, which may take several months. In the mean time, a steering group is being formed to explore funding opportunities to ensure the swift development of the new school. We hope it will be self-sufficient, with donors funding the capital expenses through Global Challenge.
