Redressing the Balance

From Tree to Cathedral!!

In 2003 many IDPs (Internally Displaced People), who had fled to the relative safety of Soroti, were gathered under a glorious fire tree in Nakatunya. It was a privilege one Sunday, writes Anne Cave one of our Trustees, to worship with them. There were tears of sadness as many had lost parents or children to the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army), but then tears of joy as an abducted daughter was returned.

In 2005 a team from Queens Road Baptist Church went to help build a more permanent place of worship and were surprised (an understatement!) to see the grand plans and extent of the vision of the peoples of Nakatunya.

As the building work continued over the next couple of years, the people were encouraged to never forget the tree, where God had first established the church, His people, and given them a new home.

In 2007 another team from Queens Road Baptist Church joined the procession, a short distance, from the flame tree to IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) Memorial Baptist Church, for its inauguration. A flame tree was planted in the grounds so that they would always remember God’s provision.

Between those two visits, Global Challenge Charity was founded and we too are mindful of God’s grace and provision, as He works through us to help improve quality of life in the area.

Last month, the church at Nakatunya celebrated 19 years of God’s grace to them. They sent a video to Queens Road Baptist Church, still thanking us for the partnership and still remembering the tree! The video can be viewed on our Facebook page by clicking on this link:

Update: the video can now be viewed on our NEWS page under July 2022.
