Redressing the Balance

International Women’s Day 2024

The beginning of March 2024, saw the celebration of International Women’s Day. The theme of the day was “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”. This year marks 47 years since the United Nations declared 8th March a global event with the aim of recognising and acknowledging milestones in the women’s movement.

Lydia Wanyato Mutende, who is a board member of the National Planning Authority, chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League and NRM Central Executive Committee in Uganda, writes in relation to International Women’s Day:

“Under our third National Development Plan (NDPIII), Uganda has rolled out interventions aimed at ‘reducing vulnerability and gender inequality along the lifecycle’ under the Human Capital Development program. This has been done through promotion of women empowerment, leadership and participation in decision making, and supporting gender equality…”

Some lucky women were sponsored to attend the celebrations by like-minded women in the UK and Pastor Abraham sent us a photo of the women from Soroti who were actively involved in the day. He says: “Good evening, Mamas. Thank you so much for supporting and putting a smile on the ladies faces. Your sacrifice humbles us, eyalama noi…God bless you.
