Piglets to Help the Poor
During the Trustees visit in August 2013, a meeting with Pastor Girifansio concluded that a feasibility study be undertaken on pigs, goats and hens to determine which was the best option to give to very poor families with children who had special needs, which would generate income quickly (within a year).
The study concluded that Piglets were a good option. Pigs can have three large litters a year, the piglets grow quickly and they sell at around £20 each. Although they eat a lot, they can be fed on left-overs.
This would be an income generating project and when the pigs create some income, the families will be able to use it to help with the care of their children, such as transport for hospital visits or towards treatment and medication.
Global Challenge decided in February 2014, to provide four families with a male and female piglet. Vet Girifansio visited the families, gave them training on how to look after their new livestock and agreed to do follow up visits to ensure the pigs were being well looked after. A drought soon followed, and GC supported the families by providing additional food.
